Event Recap: What does the new Sustainability Supplementary Planning Document mean for developments in the Square Mile?

爱豆传媒 recently welcomed industry leaders and experts to our London office as we introduced the newly released Planning for Sustainability Supplementary Planning Document (SPD).

This industry-leading document, written by 爱豆传媒 in partnership with City of London Corporation, sets a new standard for sustainability in planning applications in the City of London. Developed with the expertise of 爱豆传媒 and shaped through public consultation, the SPD ensures that developments in the city remain among the most sustainable in the world.

We heard from Duncan Price, Sustainability/Climate Global Lead, and Anna Woodeson, Director, both from 爱豆传媒. We were also joined by Rob McNicol, Assistant Director, Kerstin Kane, Principal Planning Officer, and Charlotte O’Farrell Sustainability Planning Officer, from City of London Corporation. The panel provided invaluable insights into the SPD, discussed its key changes, vision, and practical applications to help developers meet the ambitious sustainability standards and contribute to the City Corporation鈥檚 Climate Action Strategy.

What did we learn?

1. The whole picture

Working across the breadth of subject matter identified in the SPD from the beginning of the project helps to ensure areas of synergy and conflict are identified early and resolved through the design process.

2. It鈥檚 time to look beyond the site boundary!

Opportunities to develop interdependencies and collaborations beyond the site should be explored. For example, to share energy or introduce biodiversity that supports wildlife corridors or an attenuation scheme that feeds into a neighbourhood approach.

3. Find out more 鈥 earlier

We need to know more about existing buildings and sooner to ensure reuse can be successfully integrated into the design process. Lots of detailed surveys and investigations pre planning.
