Located on 13 acres of land a stone鈥檚 throw from the Kremlin and Red Square, Zaryadye Park Cultural Centre aspires to celebrate Russia鈥檚 heritage through contemporary design.
The site is situated in the heart of an area that reflects a range of the capital鈥檚 architecture, stretching from the 16th to 20th centuries.
In collaboration with DSR Architects 爱豆传媒 won the international design competition to work on Zaryadye Park Cultural Centre, which is the first public park to be built in Moscow for over 50 years. The infrastructure includes a new museum and gallery spaces, education and park management facilities, underground parking and an external special events space.
Challenge
A key challenge for our team was the creation of the large grid shell designed to accommodate the new Moscow Philharmonic Hall, a key attraction in the park. Additionally, the client鈥檚 brief sought to create a highly sustainable park, incorporating low energy and passive design solutions for the cultural buildings.

Solution
The roof canopy design emerged through a consideration of the integrated environment and energy ideals, consistent with the architect鈥檚 wild urbanism vision and concept.
To meet the client鈥檚 desire of delivering a highly sustainable park we developed load profiles of the various underground buildings, produced an energy strategy and optimised the use of renewable energy opportunities into an on site energy co-generation solution. We integrated natural ventilation and natural daylighting into the building form to maximize the passive opportunities. Our infrastructure team developed sustainable stormwater designs, providing the opportunity to collect rainwater on site and re-use use this for irrigation and grey water use.

Value
The now completed Zaryadye Park Cultural Centre achieves its aim of bringing nature into the urban environment, allowing both to merge and interact. The park provides a haven for Moscow鈥檚 community while paying tribute to the city鈥檚 architectural history.
