Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter

Bristol, UK

The Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter aims to use sport and leisure to make a positive difference in the community, and as a cornerstone of a mixed-use commercial scheme surrounding Bristol City FC鈥檚 stadium.

It includes a 5,200-seater mixed-use arena, hotel, multi-storey car park, as well as commercial, residential, retail and office buildings. 爱豆传媒 is providing building services engineering (MEP) and sustainability consultancy on the project.

The venue will host the Bristol Flyers basketball team. The venue can be reconfigured to act as a flexible arena with a capacity of around 5,000, accommodating a variety of sporting, conference, and performance uses, whilst being critical to the business strategy.

There is a wide stakeholder group for this project and our experts played a key role in supporting this engagement. Our team is developing a concept for a sitewide energy strategy that will be versatile enough to accompany all demands and will allow our client different commercial options as to future operation. We were also able to find efficiencies in cost throughout the planning process.

Our team鈥檚 experience designing various building typologies helped to inform our MEP and sustainability strategies. The benchmarks that we set out initially have proven extremely accurate, demonstrating the depth of understanding in our practice. Our communication style quickly achieved local authority and wider stakeholder buy-in for our solutions.

We are allowing for the integration of the buildings with the proposed local District Heating Network, and this will be supplemented with the implementation of solar panelling and green roofs, locating the PV panels where they will be most efficient. This solution will also enable the roof of the sports and convention centre to be used as an open-air sports facility.

Our work on a sitewide sustainability strategy also played a significant role in contributing to the successful planning application.

The Ashton Gate Sporting Quarter is a great example of a mixed use development with high sustainability credentials. It has been interesting developing a design that diversifies the energy demand across the buildings leading to a leaner and more efficient design solution.
