Inclusive environments
A truly inclusive and accessible built environment benefits everyone.
People are our passion. They drive our mission to help clients, designers and key stakeholders create the most accessible and inclusive built environments.
We understand the diverse needs, values, and concerns of individuals and how these evolving requirements impact their expectations from buildings and places.
Truly inclusive spaces exceed minimum regulations, embracing diversity and celebrating its benefits. We prioritise this in our work, recognising the importance of this evolving field by supporting our clients and projects from inception through completion and beyond.
Inclusive design excellence
By planning for inclusivity from the outset, we deliver exceptional environments that meet diverse user requirements – from accessibility needs to cultural considerations – and provide the highest quality experiences for all occupants and visitors.
We are highly experienced in integrating this service into both the design and management strategies of projects globally, across various scales and sectors, including as part of complex, multi-disciplinary teams or working client-side as a direct appointment.
Passionate thought leaders
Our team consists of passionate thought leaders and authors of key technical guidance and industry standards, who often advance this specialism through science-led research. This helps us remain authentic to the cause, fostering an embedded learning culture that strives for design excellence.
If you aim to deliver truly inclusive places, you need a team that understands the varied and intersectional needs of users, what they want from an environment and the experience they will have within it.
We offer a wide range of services in the areas of accessibility and inclusivity both in the UK and globally, including across four key areas:

Areas of expertise

Accessibility and inclusive environments
We believe accessibility and inclusion should be fundamental to every built project. Therefore, we work globally across almost all sectors to deliver places that meet diverse user requirements and support developers in going beyond regulations, by targeting best practices in inclusive buildings and cities.
Our services are wide-ranging, from stakeholder engagement and policy writing to advising on accessible wayfinding and ensuring suitable visual contrast. By targeting best practices, we create places that are resilient to changes in regulations and cultural values, making buildings and cities more futureproofed and sustainable.

Neuro-inclusivity
Everyone’s brain works differently, but this diversity is often overlooked in our built environment, leading to exclusion and reduced productivity for many. Around 15-20% of the population experiences sensory processing differences, leaving them negatively impacted in their daily interactions with buildings and urban spaces.
By embedding science-led design principles, our neuro-inclusive environments team supports clients in applying evidence-based neurodiversity design principals to create spaces that enhance mental health, wellbeing and overall experience for all.

Compliance support
The modern construction and building management industry faces increasing pressure to demonstrate competence and compliance with evolving regulations. Specialist knowledge in areas like accessibility and inclusion is therefore essential, as building regulations alone are often insufficient.
Our team helps clients understand their duties through access reviews, planning and regulation support and guidance on the Equality Act. We aim to be trusted advisors, making the complex world of accessibility guidance easier to navigate and providing peace of mind to our clients.

Inclusive masterplans
Creating accessible and inclusive places extends beyond buildings to the spaces between them. We help clients and designers create landscapes and masterplans that meet diverse needs, ensuring places are easier for everyone to use, navigate and access.
We also collaborate with our social impact team to measure the social value of these interventions, providing clients with insights into the impact of enhanced inclusivity. Our global experience in inclusive placemaking includes developing guidance documents, such as the London Legacy Development Corporation’s Inclusive Design Standards for the 2012 Olympics and subsequent updates.

The multi-disciplinary neuro-inclusive environments service offer is led by accessibility and inclusion consultants from our inclusive environments team and lighting and acoustics specialists.
Input from other specialisms in ý is also relevant on some projects and these are drawn in as appropriate for each project.
